MUSE and American Express are delighted to present the 5th annual Wharton Undergraduate Marketing Conference. This year, the theme for our conference is the Future of Marketing. The theme aims to explore what direction the marketing industry is headed towards in the future, given today’s economic downturn. Our keynote speaker will be Luke Gebb, American Express's VP of Global Network Marketing Capabilities, and there will also be a case competition at the conference as well. Click here for more information and registration.
Come out to our second GBM of the year! You'll hear updates and announcements from the board as well as an interactive presentation on integrated marketing! Take a break from studying for an hour and enjoy free pizza and beverages with other MUSE members. See you there! :)

Event Description: New to Penn? Want to know more about what to expect out of college? Come talk with MUSE's upperclassmen and get to know everything you ever needed to know about Penn. You will be paired with an upperclassman who will make sure that all of your answers are answered- classes, places to go out, how to get involved, or whatever else you may want to know. Make sure to come early!
Event Description: MUSE has had a long history of success within case competitions, having won the American Marketing Association's competition five times in a row (including last year), and attaining first place in Wake Forest University and Sony's respective cases. Find out what goes into each competition and how to sign up!
What Happened: President Lillian Chou kicked off the meeting by introducing members from last year's most successful case competitions. Later, she went over the different competitions we have open this year: AMA (American Marketing Association), WFU (Wake Forest University), SAP, Google, and charity: water. Applications for AMA and SAP are due on Friday, Sept 24 at 5 PM to muse[at]musepenn.org. All the others have their own deadlines (see the handout).
If you have any more questions, please send them to muse[at]musepenn.org. There is one general application for all the competitions (just indicate the ones you're interested in) and these can be found here.
Event Description: Over the past two years MUSE has offered consulting services to 12 clients, both non-profit and for-profit. We'll show you some of our most recent work and explain how you can get involved.
What Happened: VP of Consulting Ashley Yuki and Consulting VP Cindy Wen explained the different aspects of MUSE consulting. Past assistant account executives Willy Huang and Lucy Xu as well as account executive Diane Wang spoke about their projects. They each stressed how great an impact their respective experiences had on their professional development, from being able to interact with a business to learning about the different aspects to marketing consulting. At the end of the info session, Ashley and Cindy fielded a Q+A session. Some of the questions were:
>> 1) Q: Are freshmen allowed to apply? A: Absolutely. I (Alice, the person writing this) was an assistant account executive last fall as a freshman, and an account executive next in my freshman spring semester. It's definitely a meritocracy.
>> 2) Q: How many hours a week is the commitment? A: It varies, from 2-3 to 5-6, depending on what deadlines you're working on that week.
>> 3) Q: What projects will there be? A: CampusFood, a shoe e-retailer that is big in Singapore and wants to expand, and a few other projects that are being worked out. There will ultimately be 5-6 projects.
>> 4) Q: What's the interview process like? A: It's very casual, we want to get to know you, your working style, and strengths. At the same time, keep in mind that there are a limited number of spots for each team.
If you have any more questions, please send them to consulting[at]musepenn.org. Applications are due on Friday, Sept 24 at 5 PM to consulting[at]musepenn.org and can be found here.
Event Description: Join MUSE at our very first GBM of the year, where we'll introduce the board and committee leadership, this year's case team competitions, and MUSE consulting opportunities, deadlines, and more!
What Happened: President Lillian Chou reintroduced the board and the opportunities open to all MUSE members: committees, case competitions, and MUSE consulting. Applications for all three will be up on the website by the end of the week and are due on Friday September 24 by 5 PM.
Members then were divided into teams of two or three and each given a different guerilla marketing campaign to critique and comment on. This ranged from Unicef's vending machine that dispensed dirty water in order to raise awareness of the living situations of those in third world countries, to Charmin's refurbishment of public restrooms to promote their new toilet paper product, to the Philadelphia Zoo's eye-catching snake advertisement that was posted on public buses around city. More information and pictures of all of these campaigns can be found in the above PowerPoint download link. Lillian then facilitated a discussion between all of the teams on their impressions of these advertisements, which included a particularly heated debate over the effectiveness of Unicef's campaign.
Event Description: Geared towards freshmen and upperclassmen new to MUSE, this event will go over all of the different aspects of the MUSE organization and explain how you can get involved!
What Happened: Members got to meet the MUSE board members, who then went over the different aspects of MUSE to new members.
President Lillian Chou then gave an overview of the "3 C's of MUSE": Committees, Consulting, and Case Competitions. Each VP described in detail the different aspects to their respective committees: Executive, Membership, Community Service, Conferences, Professional Development, Promotions & Web as well as MUSE Consulting, MUSE's student consulting branch, and case team competition opportunities. Descriptions of these activities can either be found in the powerpoint (above link) or on each respective web page (Committees, Consulting, Case Competitions).
Finally, students heard from members Linda Wang, Jesse Beyroutey, Amber Jin, Dan Green, and Lillian Chou at their respective internship experiences this past summer.
